Communication fosters the understanding of the process and practice of communicationamong individuals, groups, organizations, and cultures. We are grounded in verbaland nonverbal behaviors for corporate and public, printed, and mass audiences.Specialization AreasCommunication Studies and Journalism curricula lead to the Bachelor of Science degree(B.S.) in Communication. Majors take a common, foundational core of courses, whichserves a dual purpose. First, it focuses on the personal development and growth ofthe individual for success in both personal and career life. The program helps studentsto become focused, confident, polished, and creative professionals. Second, its coursesare structured to develop career and professional competence in situational, corporate,public, and mediated environments and cultures.Communication StudiesThe bed-rock of the major core is oral (verbal and non-verbal) communication, reinforcedin the written arena.
Oral communication is emphasized. The curricula emphasizes corporateteamwork with individual collaboration along with the use of technology to enhancethe efficiency and effectiveness of communication.JournalismJournalism curricula focuses on the fundamentals of written communication and criticalthinking skills that translate to excellent multimedia storytelling in reporting andpublic relations settings.Practical ExperienceThese specializations combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on application. Thecurricula stress practical experiences.
The student magazine, newspaper, radio station, yearbook,the regional PBS-affiliate television station, and the forensics (speech and debate)team are. Further, majors are encouraged to participate in internship and co-op programs.
